PRIVACY POLICY

Statement of Donor Rights

I. Accountability

Each staff member and volunteer is responsible for maintaining and protecting the personal donor information under their control. We have a designated individual or individuals who are accountable for the organization's compliance with the Ten Privacy Principles.

II. Identifying the Purpose

The purposes for which personal information is collected must be identified before or at the time it is collected.

III. Consent

The knowledge and consent of the donor are required for the collection, use or disclosure of personal information before or at the time the information is collected.

IV. Limiting Collection

The personal information of the donor shall be limited to the purpose identified by the United Way. Information must be collected by fair and lawful means.

V. Limiting Use, Disclosure and Retention

Donor information must only be used or disclosed for the purpose for which it was collected, except with the consent of the donor, or as required by law. Personal information may be retained only as long as necessary for the fulfillment of those purposes.

VI. Accuracy

Donor information must be accurate, complete and as up-to-date as is necessary for the purpose for which it is to be used.

VII. Safeguarding Donor Information

Donor information shall be protected by security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information.

VIII. Openness and Transparency

United Way of Newfoundland & Labrador will make readily available to donors specific information about its policies and practices relating to the management of their personal information.

IX. Donor Access

Upon request, an individual will be informed of the existence, use and disclosure of their personal information and shall be given access to that information. Donors may verify the accuracy and completeness of their information and may request that it be amended if appropriate.

X. Handling Donor Complaints and Suggestions

The United Way of Newfoundland & Labrador will inform complainants of avenues of recourse, investigate all complaints received, and take appropriate measures to collect information handling practices and policies.
