Rabbittown Community Centre Inc.

Established in 1986, the Rabbittown Community Centre serves a 294-unit housing development owned and operated by the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. The NLHC currently serves over 1 400 residents in the Rabbittown area. The Community Centre addresses a variety of social, educational and recreational issues within the community.

The mandate of the Rabbittown Community Centre is to advocate on behalf of local residents and to work together with public and organizations to ensure comprehensive solutions to problems that affect their families; to provide opportunity and support in the process of individual and community capacity building to strengthen the community as a whole.

Their philosophy is to provide equal access and opportunity for community members to participate in health, social, recreational, educational, and employment programs and services.

Program: Health Nuts for Youth  $10,000 (2009): Health Nuts for Youth addressed all aspects of health for youth living in the Rabbittown Community. This program allowed them to proactively and effectively address the abundance of unhealthy lifestyles in the community and to improve the well-being and fitness levels of all youths.
Funding from United Way went towards developing a new initiative for youth wellness. Aspects of health addressed included: injury prevention, fitness, nutrition, immunization, mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy and more - placing the Rabbittown Community Centre in the ideal position to offer awareness, education and opportunities for change.
