The Parkinson Society of Newfoundland and Labrador is the provincial voice of people living with Parkinson's in NL. Working in partnership with the Parkinson Society of Canada, their purpose is to ease the burden and find a cure through research, education, advocacy and support services.

Program: Speech Education Program $3,990 (2005), $4,700 (2006), $3,312 (2009): Funding from United Way was used to contract the services of a speech therapist, to copy materials, and to purchase any necessary props.

The Speech Education Program:

Offered an opportunity for people with Parkinson's to learn coping strategies for the loss of 'autopilot' reflexes of talking and swallowingOffered an opportunity for young-onset people living with Parkinson's who have not yet encountered problems with speech and swallowing to learn exercises to help prevent these symptoms from becoming major problemsOffered a forum where people with Parkinson's connect through interactive activities that have been designed to provide opportunities to promote discussion thereby increasing learning from one anotherOffered opportunities for family and support people to learn about the complications of communication and swallowing that accompany Parkinson's and learn strategies to cope with these complications

Program: Volunteer Training Program $1,000 (2005): The Volunteer Training Program consisted of a day-long training session for Parkinson's volunteers. Topics included: what you need to know about people living with Parkinson's; the Society's policies, procedures, and profile; and financial accountability and understanding financial statements.
Funding from United Way aided the Society in preparing resource kits for participants that included all materials from the training program and other resources.
